Today, tattoo removal treatment is possible with Q-switch lasers. Other methods, besides Q-switch lasers, generally damage the skin, failing to successfully remove tattoos and potentially leaving significant scarring. During the tattooing process, the ink is permanently implanted between and inside the cells in the deep layer of the skin, and the body cannot eliminate this ink. Therefore, tattooing is a permanent process. Q-switch lasers break down the tattoo ink into small particles without damaging the skin. Thus, the tattoo ink becomes smaller and is eliminated by the skin cells. The higher the pigment density and the deeper the tattoo, the more sessions are required.
The tattoo must be at least one year old. Tattoo removal treatment is performed at intervals of 1-2 months. Amateur tattoos may require an average of 4-6 sessions, while professional tattoos may require 6-10 sessions.
Types of Q-switch lasers:
• Q-switch Nd:YAG laser 1064 nm: for black and dark blue tattoos.
• Q-switch Nd:YAG 532 nm (KTP laser): red, purple, orange colored tattoos
• Q-switch ruby laser: for black, navy blue, and green tattoos.
• Q-switch alexandrite laser 755 nm: for black, dark blue, and green tattoos.
• Pulsed dye pigment laser 585 nm: red, green, and dark blue colored tattoos
Which laser should be chosen and is effective for tattoo removal treatment?
Each color used in tattooing requires a different wavelength of light. If the tattoo consists of only one color, a single wavelength of light will suffice for treatment. However, tattoos often feature several color tones. Therefore, systems using only a single wavelength of laser light may fail to remove the different colors.
Tattoo removal systems used in laser treatment often incorporate only one of the aforementioned laser systems. For example, treatments are usually performed with devices containing only Q-switch Alexandrite, only Q-switch Nd:YAG, or only Q-switch KTP (532 nm) laser beams. In this case, removing tattoos, especially those with different colors, becomes unsuccessful.
For effective tattoo treatment, the laser system must combine different wavelengths of light. This feature is achieved in a limited number of Q-switch laser systems worldwide. These systems include the Candela Alex Trivantage (KTP 532 nm, Alexandrite 755 nm, and Nd:YAG 1064 nm) and the HS 250E+ Q-switch (KTP 532 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm). With such systems, tattoos of varying depths and colors can be treated with high success rates.
