It is a disease that affects the central part of the face, characterized by redness and dilated capillaries that can cause red and inflamed pimples. Sometimes, it can cause enlargement of the nose (rhinophyma) by widening the oil ducts, especially in the nose.
Rosacea is a fairly common disease. It is more frequently seen in middle-aged people and women. Rhinophyma, which affects the nose, conversely occurs more often in men.
The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is thought to be a vasomotor (overreaction of blood vessels) disease. It has been suggested, but not definitively proven, that it may be caused by Demodex (a skin parasite) infection.
Rosacea causes burning and redness on the face. This symptom is particularly worsened by sun exposure, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks, and stress.
It most commonly affects the central part of the face. It appears on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. The first symptoms are facial redness and flushing. Over time, the redness becomes permanent. Blood vessels dilate, making capillaries more prominent. Some patients also develop red, inflamed pimples. Eye involvement occurs in 58% of rosacea patients.
Steroid rosacea:
When corticosteroid creams are used for a long time to treat facial skin diseases, corticosteroid-induced rosacea can occur.
Treatment
General precautions to be taken: attention should be paid to the following points:
• Hot drinks and food should be avoided.
• Alcohol and caffeine should not be consumed.
• Sun exposure should be avoided at all times, but sunscreens with a higher protection factor should be used during the summer months and when in the sun.
• Spicy and hot foods should be avoided as much as possible.
Drug treatment primarily involves antibiotics such as tetracycline, erythromycin, and metronidazole, applied topically and orally. Creams containing azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and sulfur are other options. However, complete recovery is unlikely with all these treatments, and the possibility of recurrence is quite high. In severe, prolonged, and recurrent cases, isotretinoin therapy (Roaccutane®, Aknetrent®, and Zoretanin®) is highly effective.
Irritating products and tonics containing alcohol should be avoided.
