Seborrheic eczema

Seborrheic eczema is a condition characterized by itchy, dandruff-like flakes on the scalp.

Seborrheic eczema is a condition characterized by itchy, dandruff-like flakes on the scalp. However, seborrheic eczema and dandruff are different diseases. In dandruff, there is widespread fine flaking on the scalp without inflammation or redness.

In seborrheic eczema, along with dandruff, inflamed, red areas and scaling occur on the scalp, face, and trunk. Seborrheic eczema is most commonly seen on the face, especially on the eyebrows, eyelashes, sides of the nose, and behind the ears. On the body, it can appear on the front of the chest, back, and even around the navel. The regional severity and intensity of the disease vary from patient to patient.

Seborrheic eczema is caused by accelerated cell shedding in the skin in these areas. While a normal scalp has approximately 3700 cells/sq cm, dandruff has 25,000, and seborrheic eczema has 76,000.

The exact cause of seborrheic eczema is unknown. The microorganism Pityrosporum ovale, the immune system, atmospheric conditions, and stress all play a role in seborrheic eczema. It is known that seborrheic eczema decreases or even disappears during the summer months, especially during holidays.

P. ovale is a type of fungus that is already present on our skin. In patients with seborrheic eczema, P. ovale levels are higher than normal. Furthermore, patients with seborrheic eczema can recover with antifungal medications.

TREATMENT

Shampoos:

Medical shampoos containing ketoconazole 2%, selenium sulfide 1-2.5%, tar, zinc pyrithione, and salicylic acid are beneficial. During severe periods of the disease, medical shampoos should be used with every shower. When the severity of the disease decreases, medical shampoos should be used once or twice a week, alternating with non-medicinal shampoos. Patients with seborrheic eczema should shower every two days.

Drug uses:

In very severe cases, under the supervision of a dermatologist, cortisone lotions and creams may be used for a short period. In cases of intense scaling, mixtures containing tar, sulfur, and salicylic acid, as recommended by your dermatologist, may be beneficial. Tonics containing sulfur, salicylic acid, and zinc pyrithione (zinc) can support treatment when used after bathing. In cases that do not improve despite all measures, oral antifungal medications may be given.
